Fate of a Canvas !

It's not that I am a big fan of  'Mr. Fate' - but sometimes I am forced to believe in it. At times due to superb coincidences :-D and at times due to miserable failures :'-( !

So the past couple of days have been a Rendezvous with Mr. Fate!

This story is about Canvy, poor poor Canvy. I had bought him at Staples back in June' 2006, Staples UK and I am writing about him at Frankfurt in Sep' 2012. So a big halloo to Mr. Fate!

Continuing further - it was a mural that I was trying to dump on Canvy back in 2006 and he absolutely hated the way I worked my hands through the artwork. Well the result is absolutely obvious - Canvy preferred to rest in the bin. OK - So Canvy was destined to land in the art bin.

In July 2012 when I visited India, while clearing the shelves at my IL's place, I was absolutely surprised to see Canvy leaning behind a couple of other Canvases, probably still hating the half done mural at its back :-D. So my FIL had very generously taken it out of the bin and got it packed while we were leaving UK at the end of our 2.5 years stay. Hallo Mr. Fate, you still hanging around ?

So I brought Canvy to Frankfurt where I am currently living. I reworked on it and came up with this below. Canvy seems to be OK with it. So I am hoping that you guys will also be OK :-)

These are two views of the same work, turned up side down. Do let me know what you think. May be I should have taken a picture of the old Canvy, I was too occupied in recreating !

You guys have a fun filled week ahead and I will see you here soon with a new work.

Anime Characters - The Naughty and The Pretty !

hi guys !

did the post title create some curitosity ? Well this post is about a quite newly married Couple who are ofcourse my friends. I met them just a few times in LU.

Last weekend, after the plans for the party which was I was supposed to host got altered and was replanned to happen at Minu's place, I was kind of pretty relaxed (no cooking makes a woman really happy ;-P ). Laziliy munching at the snacks and the salads, I was gladly looking at all the people and the kids out there. Some were tired and some were hungry.....Karthik as usual had no expressions what so ever....kids were jumping and having fun.

I spotted Varun, who was having a nice sign language conversation with Garima, his newly wedded wife. Well this is the couple I mentioned a few secs back. So what I see is - Varun naughtily teases Garima. Garima pulls up the girly tantrums making those pretty girly faces and Varun immediately jumps to rescue her pained heart ;-). Then Garima feels comforted and Varun turns to a friend and gives that naughty smile. This made me sketch these anime characters - The Naughty Varun and The Pretty Garima. These are not portrait caricatures. These are just anime characters.

This was a very quickly pulled up sketch and I am now seeing a million flaws. I hope to upload some good artworks in the near future. Sorry guys, if I am disappointing you.

So you guys have fun and I am going to get myself a nice cup of tea. Have a nice week ahead and luv u all. And yes..... if you feel like yelling at me for the bad sketches, don't hesitate to use the comment form.

Anime Character - Indian Bride

Hi guys....

yeap its me.....i know i know....sorry.....but i was too disturbed and confused to complete any of my art works to put up a post here :-(

the more the research, the more is the confusion, desperation and dissappointment......atleast for me thats what happens....but u know me....isnt it....i just DONT give up :-D

well this is not a painting, all of them are still under progress and my brain seems to successfully keep escaping everytime i try to make it work.....so up i come with an anime character

yesterday at Geeta's lunch party, which was of course a 'all women' party.....we all had much fun....and many chapters of discussions ;) ... all were sharing with each other their wedding pictures and some fond memories.....and all the weddings seemed different.....what was common though, was the Indian bride and I couldn't keep myself from making this indian bride anime character....i will hopefully be able to come up with more in this variety....i am working on it :-D

Sorry about the patchy look guys......i was sketching at 2 am in the night :-( ..... will be making a coloured copy of this soon with much better shading

okay then my darlings, you guys all have fun and i get back to my sketch pad...looks like i have got some momentum now :-)

luv you all

When I started painting !

I started painting seriously after I met Mrs. Sarita Singh. She is a very senior artist with a BFA, MFA from Banaras Hindu University, loads and loads of experience and a lovely lovely heart. I will post about her and her paintings shortly !

It was my first experience with oils and I still remember my excitement when I did a human face for the first time. There was no stopping after that.

I painted a lot of women before getting attracted to more abstract compositions. Below are pictures of some of the initial works. These will always remain close to my heart because this was my stepping stone for my much desired Artist career.

Off to pictures now.....sorry for the image quality !

While I am working on the my next set of paintings, I wish you all have fun and I will see you sometime soon.

Introducing FremdeBlicke !

Artists, Artlovers and the World,

Hello. Many things in the past weeks kept me away from painting and blogging and I am afraid it might remain so for the next 2 months. An art event is coming up in mid July featuring my works and works of couple more artists from India. I will be doing another post on the other artists and their art works.

This July group exhibiton is the 53rd event in the FremdeBlicke series. The 52nd event is an exhibition titled 'UNNAHBAR NAH' featuring works by Stephanie Straube and will be opening tomorrow, the 25th of May. Any one who is reading this post and is in Munich, I request them to attend the Vernissage tomorrow at 6 PM.

Venue :  Klartext e.V.
            Augustenstraße 77
            80333 München

Vernissage is a German term and means the offical opening of an Exhibition. There will be music, food and drinks. For the 53rd event, titled 'Does it make Sense?', a separate post with flyers and a formal invitation, will follow.

Now, coming to FremdeBlicke !

I am writing this post particularly to introduce FremdeBlicke.

FremdeBlicke : The Gaze of the Stranger and Gazing at the Strange

Fremdeblicke is a series of art exhibitions started in 2004. Die Fremdeblicke is a german word meaning Foreign Glance. The eyes of an artist see not what others see, everything an artist glances has a foreign view and every glance of an artist is foreign.

What does it mean to me ? Ans : FremdeBlicke is to me - A gallery that dint raise its eyebrow and massage its chin when I said, 'I am an Emerging artist and I wish to show case my work through an exhibition.' And I am sure there are other artists in the list of 51 past exhibitions, who would agree with me. FremdeBlicke doesnot charge to showcase works in Klartext premises.

What am I doing to show my gratitute ? I am doing an fb account and fb page to feature all FremdeBlicke events going forward. A blog is also taking shape but will need some time to go public.

What do I ask from you ? I need your support and the support from your friends and their friends. I need more people to join this facebook account. Please add FremdeBlicke to your fb friendlist. And go ahead and like the FremdeBlicke fb page. There are so many out there who need FremdeBlicke, please lets take FremdeBlicke one step towards them.

Add friend on : FremdeBlicke fb account
Please like : FremdeBlicke fb page

Thankyou and lots of luv and hug

Introducing Small Hands Creating Hope

Post Inspiration : mamasmiles.com

Pic credit: mama smiles
I havenot seen my grandpa. We lost him to Cancer. My dad fainted right in the cremation grounds after he finished the last rituals. My dad was 18 then. I feel heartbroken to see my dad's eyes when he talks about grandpa :-(

I grew up hearing stories about him. An amazing gardner, a fantastic cook and a children lover, he had the most minimal demands from life. My grandma is still alive. She lived 25 years with him and its now 40 years she has been living without him. Life can sometimes be so cruel. Even today there are tears when she speaks about grandpa !

In 2003, when I met my husband, I learnt that his dad is a Cancer survivor. I am so glad to have him as my FIL because he is the most loving person I have ever seen. My MIL was just 32 when my FIL was diagonised with cancer. My husband and my SIL were kids then. I realize, what an amazingly courageous woman she is, when she sometimes speaks of her experiences. I am very fortunate to have both my parents and both my Parents in Law and I want my children to hop on their knees untill the kids are heavy enough not to be able to do so anymore .... ha ha ha....its lovely to have FAMILY   :-)

My SIL donated her beautiful, thick, gorgeous hair to Cancer cause !

Inspiration for this postMaryanne from mamasmiles who is a Cancer survivor herself. Mary, I wish you loads and loads of healthy years and wish ur grandchildren hop on ur knees too untill u find them too heavy :-D

This event will be celebrated for a month through blog hop. More information can be found on Mary's website listed above.

Life, You cannot intimidate Me !

Back from a good three weeks vacation. Had a nice time in India with family and friends. A wedding is coming up in the family, so very very excited about it. Summary -- it was a fantastic vacation.

Well, i do have some stuff to make me sad at the moment. I had applied to the AABER Award in Munich. The results were out last night and I DIDNOT make it. Out of 224 applications, 65 applicants got successful and I wish all the very best to all who made it. Any one interested can look up their website AABER Award . U can find them on Facebook too. Very good wishes to Aaber team for the 2012 Award !

So what does this experience mean to me ?  Ans : More hard work !

But I am not giving up. I have come a long way from Engineering to Art and against all ODDS. I am not letting small failures intimidate my spirits now.

So, with all hopes and little sadness, I will meet you here in some time with new pictures and hopefully a new direction.

luv u all and tons of hugs

A Man behind A Woman !!

Pin It I had been thinking of a creative way to thank the One Person who has believed in my creative instincts all this while, untill I stumbled against the 'Men Behind Women' featuring section of 'handmade Europe'. The link goes here ==>  Men Behind Women : handmade Europe

And my search had a full stop !! What better way than to blog it away :-) !!

Having a strong critic at home, Karthik, my hubby :-), well I never really needed another critic. Ha ha ha....it must be sounding crazzy, but let me tell u the advantages of it. He hardly gets impressed by any one or anything and once he likes my work, it makes me so confident about my work irrespective of what others feel about them.

Something that I heard couple of days ago, 'if u write for ur drawer, there is always a chance that u may write bad stuff', made me really feel the importance of having a critic right by my side. Its also true that most people have liked all those works that were ''Passed'' by my critic hubby.

Above all, my critic hubby never lets me take up any project without being well prepared, and slowly I am seeing how mature and professional I am growing !!

An organiser and a manager at home : Does it feel creepy ?? :D :D  ha ha ha .... well it did feel creepy at the beginning but thanks heaven I gave it time to really see what gud it cud do to have a strong and organised manager at home, well my hubby again !!  I know that many people feel artists are unorganised people and its true for me, i like being unorganised and love to do things at my pace and when I feel like....but I have also seen the huge advantages of being a well organised artist. It keeps me ahead of time for all my projects, it makes me keep up with deadlines and also prevents any situations of panic. And it also keeps me well prepared for surprise events. So I have started seeing that its more rewarding to be a well organised artist !!

And now to the business part of art !! I guess I would have always remained a hobby artist, had it not been for my hubby. Karthik, my husband, has a instinctive urge towards client facing activities. And that has in many many ways influenced me to think BIG about my art projects.

And to sum it up with a line for Karthik, thankyou my love for believing in me !!

March Creations !!

Pin It After 3 long and tiring weeks, I am finally able to write this post. Below are some of my recent paintings.

Walking Together, Oil on Canvas.

All relations grow strong with time. When the 'I' is replaced with 'WE' in a relationship, it brings an amazing amount of beauty and happiness in life.

Walking Together, Oil on Canvas

Polluted City, Acrylic on Canvas : This painting is an effort to illustrate the ever increasing pollution in cities.

Polluted City, Acrylic on Canvas

Neighbourhood, Acrylic on Canvas : This abstract painting illustrates through colours, the cohesive and adhesive emotions of Indian neighbourhood. Indian neighbourhoods display complex emotions and this is my initial attempt to paint it. This is one of my favourite topics and I hope to come up with more works on it.

Neighbourhood, Acrylic on Canvas

Land of Rising Sun, Oil on Canvas : Landscape depicting Japan using Sushi, chopsticks, seaweed, fish and a hint of the flag.

Land of Rising Sun, Oil on Canvas

This is all I have for this post. I hope u enjoyed the paintings. I will be back soon with new works.

Until then wish you all the very best.

And do leave me a comment, your time and opinion means a lot to me !!

I dont wish to work hard today !!

Pin It With absolutely no mood for any hardwork, I did this pretty simple glass painting. Materials used are very very common and were picked at shops round the corner. But to my surprise, I wanted to frame this and hang it right in my living room. :-)
I used a simple window glass pane bought at a store just two blocks away from my apartment. The design was picked from a bedsheet my mom had bought from a street vendor in 1997. And I grabbed it when she almost discarded it.

Fevicryl craft glass colours were used. The pack comes with a black liner.

The glass pane was placed neatly over the design and the design was traced out directly using the liner. After the liner dried out, the other glass colours were used to fill. This is how it looks.

I am sorry about the camera flash :-(

Right opposite to this painting, I plan to neatly fold the bedsheet to display the above pattern and nail it on the wall. I would call this set up ' The Sister Works'. I would love a couple of suggestions however. This plan is however still in progress and I will try to post pictures as soon as possible.

PS : Glass colours are water based. Colour blending can be done in glass colours using a wet brush.

Hope to see u around next time too !!

and ......this post is going to join 'The Weekly Story' party hosted by a fabulous blogger Patricia Torres. Do stop by her blog Colours Dekor to have a great experience. So, meet u at the party !!

2012 - A new direction !!

Pin It Welcome back !!

2012 has been very different and I had an exciting start !!

Acrylics have taken preference over Oils. The randomness in my brush strokes has increased and I am enjoying the process of painting without thinking :-) !! More than that, I am enjoying the surprise that awaits at the end of my random work. Each day, I see a different perspective, a different image. And very surprisingly, even my viewers agree that they see a different image every time they look at the art.

And the more I work with Acrylics, the more I get inclined towards them. But that doesnt mean I am abandoning Oils. They have been my friends for some time now. So lets begin the tour with Oils first !!

Buddha :

I love painting him, as much as I love crafting him. It fills me with an amazing amount of Peace.

Its an Oil on Canvas. The writing on this Painting reads the Four Nobel Truths by Buddha. The script is Chinese. I donot know the script well enough. So any one who knows the script and thinks, there is a mistake somewhere, is welcome to give suggestions.

The Auspicious 8

Auspicious 8 buddhist symbols (a.k.a. Ashta-mangala) on a Mural background. Oil on Canvas.

Ashtamangala are a sacred suite of Eight Auspicious Signs endemic to a number of Dharmic Traditions such as Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. The symbols or "symbolic attributes" are yidam and teaching tools. Not only do these attributes, these energetic signatures, point to qualities of enlightened mindstream, but they are the investiture that ornaments these enlightened "qualities". Many cultural enumerations and variations of the Ashtamangala are extant.

Groupings of eight auspicious symbols were originally used in India at ceremonies such as an investiture or coronation of a king. An early grouping of symbols included: throne, swastika, handprint, hooked knot, vase of jewels, water libation flask, pair of fishes, lidded bowl. In Buddhism, these eight symbols of good fortune represent the offerings made by the gods to Shakyamuni Buddha immediately after he gained enlightenment.

Love doesnot care about Time :

Hmm so this is what I was talking about couple of min back. An Acrylic on Canvas. I see new images everytime I look at it.

This is what Bala Manickanathan has to say :

I see a couple dancing in the living room on a snowy evening (with awesome window view) and they don't care about time - Pendulum infront of the fireplace (which symbolize that the clock is ticking). About the horizontal and vertical lines -  "The penetration of the vertical line, just a ray of light coming into your darkness of horizontal line, is the beginning of new life, a new beginning of living life.
PS : Bala is a SAP consultant by profession and a Photographer by choice. His amazing photographs can be seen on Facebook in his account.

This is what Pramod Behera has to say :

Portrait of a Woman, water view, someone working on a field or a carpet...may be more than one person...or may be sunrise n sunset.
Couple of days later, this is what he has to say :
Today in ur painting...i see a man and a woman sitting on a bench at a quiet place. The man is resting his hand on the bench rest and the lady's chunri* is falling behind the bench
*chunri is a part of an Indian attire for women.
PS : Pramod Behera is an MBA graduate and is also a Photographer by interest.

Sunset :

An Acrylic collage on Canvas. This painting is my effort to illustrate the impact of human activities on nature.

This is how Pramod Behera feels about this painting :

I feel blue when i see this painting, its like a fall of an age. There is light but it is not bright depicting dullness, heaviness in ones feelings. The human sapient is letting go of the nature's embrace, seeking relaxation in the artificial world. Nature - Questioning in with-in, where is all the love n kindness, why is all that i see is bloodshed, hatred, discomfort...I better rest(dark star).

 Bleeding SUN :

Another Acrylic on Canvas !! This painting is my effort to illustrate Global Warming. The Sun burning down Earth, slowly each day is illustrated by the use of geometrical shapes and appropriate colours.

I hope you have enjoyed taking this tour. Looking forward to seeing you again. I will be back soon with new paintings. Untill then have a nice time !!

PS : Please respect the Artist's efforts. Do not use my pictures without my knowledge. I will be glad to share, you just need to ask. Thankyou.

Tanjore Art : A blissful experience !!

Pin It I wanted to do a post on Tanjore Paintings. The post however dint happen partly because I got lazy and partly because I forgot :-( .

A recent visit to the Lacquer Art Museum in Münster made me really want to do this post. The classy and gorgeous relief work in some of the collections there made me recollect the exquisite relief work that goes in to the making of Tanjore Art. Unfortunately I have no pictures of the collections in Lacquer Art Museum to make a post on it :-( .

So moving on to Tanjore Painting, anyone from South India is sure to know tons about Tanjore (Tanjavur) Paintings. And a simple googling too will give tons and tons of information about this art work. I will however brief it here in my post for the convenience of my audience :-).

Tanjore Painting is a form of classical South Indian painting native to the town of Tanjavur (anglicized as Tanjore) in the state of Tamil Nadu. This art form dates back to about 1600 AD and most part of the process of making a Tanjore Painting is still preserved as heritage. The striking importance of these paintings is due to the use of high quality gold foils and semi-precious stones. The paintings mostly depict episodes from Hindu mythology and feature Hindu Gods and Goddesses extensively.

And for an Iyer artist Maatuponnu (thats the Tam word for Daughter in Law :-)), there can ofcourse be no excuse for not trying her hands in Tanjore Paintings. So in 2010, I set off to experience the making Tanjavur Paintings. And it was an absolute treat to my soul !!

Dhanya Laxmi

Hindu goddess MahaLaxmi is the giver of Wealth, Prosperity (both material and spiritual), light, wisdom, fortune, fertility, generosity and courage.

Hindu mythology believes in eight secondary manifestations of goddess MahaLaxmi, called AshtaLaxmi. DhanyaLaxmi is one of the eight manifestations. She bestows Agricultural prosperity. The picture shows a Sugarcane in her hand which symbolises Agricultural wealth.

Ganesha

He is a very popular God, known for being a food lover. His vahanam (vehicle he uses to travel) is a rat :-). He is also believed to destroy all troubles and hence called Vighnahari(vighna = trouble , hari = destroyer).

There is an interesting story of Ganesha and Kubera. Kubera is the God of Wealth. Intending to boast his riches, he once decided to host a grand fest for all gods and goddesses. Lord Shiva (father of Ganesha) unable to attend, politely declined the invitation and suggested that Ganesha cud attend instead of him. Load Shiva however cautioned Kubera about Ganesha's appetite. Since Kubera already wanted to boast his riches, he was very glad to get an appropriate opportunity. Ganesha, wishing to destroy Kubera's pride, ate so much that Kubera finally gave up and asked for forgiveness. He understood that Ganesha was teaching him a lesson for being proud. :-)

Indian children grow up listning to such stories from grandparents :-) .

Pic of the above painting while it was in progress
Balkrishna

Child krishna with Yashoda and Nand. Krishna grew up in Vrindavan where his foster parents lived. There are many stories of Krisna's past times in Vrindavan. The butter pot clutched so tight in his arms cannot be missed !!

Pic of the above tanjore work while in progress.

The below pic is already posted earlier. The picture however was not very clear. I am reposting a better one :). Its a 3d work.

I am very glad you stopped by and hope you enjoyed the art works. I will be back soon with new posts and ofcourse new art works :-) .

ArtWorks from 2011 - At a glance !!

Pin It I have been striving to create my style. This is an ongoing process and nothing ever seems to satisfactory. The pics I am posting here are my original works from 2011.

My Day End : The above painting shows how a beautiful woman looks at her day-end. She is busy the entire day taking care of home, family, friends, relatives and pets. Why is she sad at Day-End ? Why does she not look beautiful at Day-End ? Is it the 'busy day' that is making her sad or is there something missing in her Day ?

Better Half : This is self explanatory :)

Mom : Mom at the Tulsi early in the morning

Amma : Mom at the Tulsi early in the morning (B/W)

Silhouette : She appears in a silhouette in his Dream every night. He tries to search her in a pool of people every day. Will you find her ? I ask. I will keep trying !! he says.
